A Fremont House : On the Move

The red house was the one demolished to make room for the new house. According to Zillow, it was a "2 bdrm, 1 bath", but the only way that could be true is if there was no kitchen.
I'm pretty sure the green house is the house that was moved. Note the back porch (and color) is the same in all of the photos.
You can see the i-beam and bracing at the back of the house.
The house being backed into it's final destination.
They're still going to lower it a few feet.
That night, it's still off the ground.
This is what a 70-year-old house looks like underneath.
Reminds me of Jenga
Apaprently, a foundation will be built around the Jenga blocks.
You can see the cellar joists, wiring, plumbing, and venting .. all in great shape.

Update as of Sept. 12th:

I spoke with the owner of the house over the weekend. He said the total cost to move was approx. $150k, but could be a little higher after all of the receipts are tallied. The plan is to build a foundation around the current supports (see the last couple of photos) and then lower the house onto the new foundation, after which the utilities can be connected. He mentioned a total cost of approx. $300k for the whole project. New pictures added below show that the house is about 15' above the ground.

Original Post, on Sept. 7th:

This weekend a house was moved from 36th and Palentine to 40th and Evanston (approx 20 blocks). The route had No Parking signs all along it, so it was easy to see where the house was going. The only reason I knew the move was happening was that my neighbors from up the street were re-parking their cars earlier in the day.

One city block lost power for a few hours, as the house was taller than most every power & telephone line, so the truck was proceeded (and followed) by Seattle City Light & QWEST trucks, helping to disconnect, and then reconnect, the lines.

The move began at 2am on Sunday morning and was completed at approx 11am (the house was in place anyways, just not lowered into the ground).

Here's a real BLOG entry about it, which gives some of the background.

Here's a video, which is super rad.

And some Flickr photos.

Apparently, the 1950-something house was scheduled for demolition and was purchased last-minute for $1. The destination lot is marginally bigger than the house that landed on it. Prior to the house move, the lot had the tiniest house ever on it, about the size of a trailer, and it was at the very back, so there was 60 feet of lawn and 20 feet of trailer.

My very amateur guess on the total cost of the move is between $50k and $100k, probably closer to the latter. The problem being the large number of power and telephone lines that had to be taken down, as well as the fact that Phinney is a 22° grade, which is a ridiculous grade when considering moving a house. As well, they needed two massive trucks instead of 1, as one was required to tow the other up the aforementioned ridiculous grade. As well, the trucks were in action for 9 hours, and one of them was stationary for another 24 hours following the move (and counting)...
